dementia friendly design

Transforming an older adults ward to improve patients, visitors and staff well-being. Each bay in the ward was transformed into a front door, representing the different cultures within the borough of Newham. This system was created as wayfinding for patients (many of whom suffer from dementia) and a way to bring the outside in - bringing colour and vibrancy to stimulate the patients.

Response

“The patients and their relatives are pleased and fascinated by it. One patient even said that he felt like he was at home!”

Dionne Daniel | Senior Nurse

“We are delighted with this project to transform the wards, by using an art strategy that will create dementia-friendly areas for our patients that are also playful, engaging and driven by good, intelligent design by recent Central St Martins graduates.”

Catsou Roberts | Director of Vital Arts
