Ctrl Your Future:

Do Good with Digital

EDUCATION & TECHNOLOGY

When the Creative Director of Karmarama approached Sisterhood to be one of the hero collaborators for the Institute of Codings #CtrlYourFuture campaign in 2020 and put on an event to demonstrate how tech can be powerful tool for social change we knew we had to set a challenge for the next generation of creative thinkers.

Like the rest of the world our plans came to a holt in February and we worked closely with the team at Karmarama and The Institute of Coding to pivot our event so girls across the UK could access an opportunity that would give them a different experience in using tech and creating digital products.

The outcome? A 2-day Do Good with Digital create-a-thon facilitated by Sisterhood to provide 40 girls with the opportunity to work alongside digital experts and co-create digital tools, platforms and services that make the world a better place. To get participants excited and enrolled onto the event we created and ran a social campaign that highlighted relevant change-makers, trailblazers and pioneers who are using tech and digital design for social good.

CTRL YOUR FUTURE : DO GOOD WITH DIGITAL

Young womxn from across the UK collaborate to create change-making digital solutions.

Digital skills are needed now more than ever. During a pandemic that has completely changed the role of digital in our working lives, Sisterhood and the Institute of Coding (IoC) wanted to provide young womxn with a free virtual workshop, where every participant could take on the challenge to make the world a better place through digital.

Using different platforms and programmes to help facilitate creative and collaborative experiences, the Do Good With Digital event brought together almost 40 young womxn aged 16-17 to create digital solutions to the question: If you could use digital to make the world a better place, what would you create?

The Need for More Womxn in Digital

The tech industry is about forward thinking and innovative behaviour, but only 16% of IT workers are women and just 11% of Directors come from a BAME background [1]. Considering these statistics, the overarching aim of this event was to encourage a broader and more diverse group of young people to sign up to digital skills courses at higher education level and enter the digital sector.

Tech jobs can also often perceived as boring or stale. But with 82% of all job openings now requesting digital skills [2], we wanted to show young people how digital skills can be used for positive and creative change. By partnering with the IoC, we were able to highlight innovative ways to use digital, and the many different potential pathways to digital careers.

Be Her So We Can See Her

To drive applications we created content spotlighting inspirational, diverse women taking on some of the biggest social issues of our time and using their digital skills to make the world better, and more accessible, through tech.

Meet the mentors

Our incredible line-up of mentors teamed up with the participants to support them through the creative process from concept to creation. The mentors’ skills spanned from coding, AI, digital marketing, UX/UI, strategy and more. Each also had ambitions of helping to create a diverse digital space. Most of all, they acted as incredible examples of what is possible to achieve when you pursue a digital career.

Digital Studio

Every participant received an offline toolkit in the post to accommodate for preferred methods of learning and any technical issues. To create a sense of community through our virtual studio we worked with Sprankenstein Studio to create a series of animated stickers and filters so we could see the create-a-thon from a different perspective.

Designing for Good

From concept to completion Sisterhood Studio supported the entire creative process from co-designing the brand identity, e-invites, social media activations, digital advertising, to creative toolkits and digital zoom backgrounds.

Good Intentions into Good Action

Sisterhood was one of the hero collaborators for the CTRL Your Future campaign and the Do Good with Digital event made waves in the digital and design world. 1-Digital Event, 60 Applications, 34 Young People, 8 Mentors, 7 Digital Solutions.
